The Sufi tradition represents the mystical dimension of Islam, with its adherents—Sufis—pursuing union with God as their ultimate goal. This pursuit is enriched through various expressions such as dance, music, storytelling, art, aesthetic practices, and an array of meditation and spiritual techniques. Central to Sufism is the emphasis on love as the path to God, highlighting the crucial role of the teacher (Sheikh) in guiding the seeker on their spiritual journey. The Quran refers to Israel as “the blessed land,” a designation that holds true across centuries as a vibrant center for Sufi mystics and orders. Notably, Sufism is believed to have originated in the city of Ramla towards the end of the 8th century. Dr. Zeev Ben Arie, a practicing whirling dervish and author of three books on Sufism in Israel, offers insights into this rich tradition. The forthcoming articles will present extracts from his works, shedding light on the profound spiritual legacy of Sufism in the region.
